That is my shirt not my boob that you see

my baby has gas and its so horrible to see her cry. She always gets it just when I'm putting her to the breast and she pulls away screaming in pain. But then it passes and she's so greedily hungry that she roots around looking for my nipple again. She'll clamp back on for another minute before the next pain of gass comes through. It's so sad and I feel like I'm doing something wrong, that maybe it's me but after several days of this I'm realizing that it's only gas pain. She's in pain....My nipples feel like they have been ripped off a thousand times and I'm confessing here that I've slipped her a bottle of formula a couple of times now and that's probably where the stupid gas pain is coming from
I suck at being perfect / I want to think I'm doing Ok as a mother / I wish my baby wasn't uncomfortable / I'm tired of all these old mothers telling me how to fix my problems with rice cereal/ I wish my baby wouldn't tear off my tits

My girl had colic so bad for three months that I wanted to shoot myself point blank! On the up side, you gotta get those gas drops they have out now. They're great and they also make the babe a little drowsy. It's no strong medicine or anything like that. It's just made of something that aids in breaking down the acid in her tummy. It's actually what she's lacking in her tummy to make it calm down. E-mail me if you like. I don't know everything, but I like to try and help. It's hard figuring all this stuff out. Oh, and thanks for the sweet message! I appreciat that.

STOP THE FORMULA!

Try some Gerber Gas drops - I swore by them.

Also, push her little legs right up to her belly, bending her knees. Work them back and forth and listen to her let one rip.

i've had so many people telling me already what to do to get the baby to sleep the whole night through, how to get rid of gas, how to get it to stop crying - my god! as much as i appreciate all of the advice, i want to tell people to wait and let me actually have the baby first, then if i have problems that i can't figure out myself, then i will ask for advice.

don't put yourself down for the bottle feedings either - hubby and i have been talking about the different things we need to be prepared for spending a bunch on and every time he says formula, i remind him that i plan on breastfeeding and hope not to have to use the formula very often, especially in the first year. i've had sore nipples from having them pierced earlier this year and i think that might be good prep for having the baby suck on them constantly next year.

p.s. i've gotten the rice cereal comment many times already from one lady in particular, but i'm keeping my tongue still on that one - i agree with stephanie, way too young for the stuff yet!

just ignore the rice cereal advice from older moms (like my evil MIL!). their system can't handle it well at that age, which is why it drops them into a deep sleep. nice, huh? just about as nice are the ones who tell you they gave their babies tylenol or cough syrup to induce sleep.

if you are having nipple pain, i HIGHLY recommend soothies glycerin gel pads. you can get them very easily online. they are a little expensive (about $10 a pair), but you can refrigerate them and use them for a long time. i used them on a friend's recommendation, and i never had any nipple pain, soreness or bleeding. i went through 2 packs, and then g. got to be an experienced nurser and we were fine. in fact, i just ordered 2 packs for this coming baby. i won't go to the hospital without 'em! :)

I understand the frustration of having a child with gas pain and being unable to do much to help. Looks like you've had lots of response, but I'll throw my two cents in anyway. When Chris and Tommy had gas pains I would lay them face down, tummy across my forearms, and walk them around the yard (in summer) and throughout the house (in winter). It seemed to help just a little bit...and I felt like I was doing something.
Sore nipples - Don't know anything about that, luckily!

You got good advice on here. The bending kees and straiten, then bend and straiten worked for mine. Don't beat yourself up for giving her a bottle, nursing is so hard and it is so not talked about enough. But she is way to young for cereal. You are doing a great Job from what the blog shows and being a concerned Mom shows even more how wonderful you do with her! YOu go with your Gut and you will be fine!

At least, no one had told you to feed Avery with sushi!

I say, take Avery away from your nipples and give her the bottle. I'm pretty sure that she won't remember it in 15 years when drinking beers right from the bottles!

(sorry, no helpfull comment here: I'm not a mother)
